ADVANCE CIRCULAR is an impactful transnational project (2023–2025) co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, focused on developing circular economy skills. Led by Romania’s National Institute for Research and Development in Tourism (INCDT), it unites organizations across four countries—Spain (CESUR), Bulgaria (BAAT), Slovenia (e‑Zavod), and Romania (ACE‑ES RO)—to bring circular economy tools and training into the tourism sector and related vocational education (VET) systems.

Objectives & Scope

  • Assess readiness for circular economy practices in tourism through two foundational studies:
    1. “Are we ready for Circularity?”
    2. “Skills for the green and circular transition” .
  • Empower tourism & VET professionals with three innovative tools:
    • Practical guidelines (“Moving from theory to practice”)
    • A taxonomy of circular-skills
    • Interactive digital cards based on the 5 R’s: Rethink, Redesign, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
  • Deliver hands-on learning: A five-module training package, coupled with digital self-learning materials and transnational and national workshops using Design Thinking.

Key Achievements

  • Mapped challenges, gaps, and strengths related to CE in tourism and VET across Romania, Spain, Bulgaria, and Slovenia.
  • Engaged over two dozen professionals in national and cross-border training events.
  • Developed tools that support VET instructors, tourism professionals, and enterprises in integrating circular economy principles into daily practices.

Why It Matters

  • Bridges theory and practice: By linking cutting-edge research with practical, technology-forward tools, ADVANCE CIRCULAR equips tourism stakeholders to become active agents in Europe’s green transition.
  • Fosters regional collaboration: Enhances cross-border learning, knowledge-sharing, and stronger cooperation among tourism and vocational education systems.
  • Addresses real-world needs: Targets the skills and attitudes necessary to transition to a circular economy, promoting resource efficiency and sustainable tourism across Europe.
